Sorry I been gone for a minute, but now that Im on vacation I just been relaxing. Last night the NBA had their annual draft lottery to see which team will get the number 1 overall pick. The Cleveland Cavaliers won the number 1 pick as well as having the number 4 pick. So who are they going to go with??? A lot of people are saying that Kyrie Irving is still the most likely top pick. Will be able to help resurrect the Cavaliers? Or how about Derrick Williams from Arizona? Im not sure if one player can make the Cavs relevant again or be what LeBron was to them. But we shall see....Wednesday, May 18, 2011

Is it UNC year?
As stated in one of my earlier blogs, James McAdoo who is a top recruit, committed to UNC. Another top recruit that UNC is getting is PJ Hariston who is a 6-5 shooting guard. With UNC getting a great recruiting class coming in, UNC has a good shot of taking the title next year. A few of this years top player are either graduating or making the jump to the NBA. A few noticeable people who are making the jump are Kyrie Irving, Brandon Knight, Terrence Jones, Kemba Walker, and the Morris twins from Kansas. UNC is bringing back the core of this years sweet sixteen team.

Skys the limit
So the past couple of weeks, Skylar Diggins from Notre Dame has made a name for herself in the Women's NCAA tournament. Her and her team are remembered for knocking off the overall #1 seed UConn. Next season should definitely be a good year for her as junior point guard. One thing that I like about her game is that she is able to set her teammates up as well as get a shot for herself.

NCAA champs
Shout outs go to UConn Mens Basketball and Texas A&M Womens basketball. But more shout outs go to Skylar Diggins from Notre Dame. She's the truth!!
Stay or Go
During the best decade, the NBA has seen a trend of having player coming straight out of high school and entering the professional ranks. While some of these players succeed, plenty of them fail. The league then imposed that the player must be at least 1 year removed after high school. This resulted in top freshman basketball players in college leaving after their first year. Many schools are at a high turnover rate due to these players making the jump to the NBA. The latest person who is in this trend is Kyrie Irving from Duke. He is projected to be the top pick in next years draft. This past week he declared that he will be leaving Duke and entering the draft. The strange thing about this situation is that Irving has only played in 5 games total in his collegiate career due to injury and he is still favored by many NBA scouts. In my opinion, he should stay. What y'all think?

Final Four
UConn, Kentucky, Butler, and last but certainly not least... VCU. Who would have thought that a team out of the CAA would have made it to the final four? I thought it, but I had ODU in it. Oh well...

Don't let the hair fool you...
So yesterday, Old Dominion University hosted Cleveland State in a Bracket Buster game. A lot of people on campus were thinking this should be an easy win. Man were we wrong!!! Cleveland State has a player named Norris Cole who lit ODU up yesterday!! The score at the half was ODU 31 and Cleveland State 28. Out of those 28 points by Cleveland State, Norris Cole accounted for 24 of them. We simply did not have an answer for him. During one part of the game, the student section was chanting "ball hog!" I'm sorry, but if you have a player that is on fire, you would be dumb not to keep giving him the ball. Luckily in the 2nd half ODU tighten up their defense and was able to pull away with a 74-63 win. Norris Cole finished the game with 35 points and 5 assists. Cole averages 21.4 points per game along with 6 rebounds and 5.6 assists. A few weeks ago Cole had a 40/20 game and 1 assist shy of a triple double.

All is not lost
At the beginning of the collegiate season Harrison Barnes and Terrence Jones were said to be at the top of their Freshmen class. Terrence Jones who is a SF for Kentucky had his ups and downs. While averaging 17.8 pts per game, Jones and Coach Calipari had their disputes. With that not affecting Jones play, he is still seen has a high prospect for the upcoming NBA draft. Harrison Barnes who plays for UNC probably had the most hype coming into this season.
Shockingly, sometimes freshmen players actually play like freshmen. This is a quote from Slamonline.com but all is not lost for Harrison Barnes. As of late, he has been getting more buckets while helping his team get quality wins.

D-E-F-E-N-S-E... I may be wrong, but I doubt it.
I came across a blog site called rushthecourt.net and the website had a section called "Constructing The Perfect College Basketball Player". One thing that stood out to me was Ohio States David Lighty. Although he's been there for about 10 years (just kidding) due to injury, he is best known for his lock down defense on opponents. At 6'5, he can guard various positions from PG, SG, and SF. So whenever Ohio State needs a big defensive stop, they play new Charles Barkley T-mobile commercial, then call on David Lighty to step up! CAA.... What Up!
Like I said in my entry blog, I attend Old Dominion University which is a school in the CAA conference. Because the CAA is not a huge conference like the ACC or Big East, A lot of players in our conference does not get a lot of exposure. A player that comes to mind that did get the necessary exposure was Eric Maynor (Virginia Commonwealth University). For those who know Eric Maynor, he is best recognized for leading his team in the defeat of Duke in the 2007 tournament. Maynor is now playing back-up PG for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Some other players that are highlighting the CAA is Denzel Bowles from James Madison University, Charles Jenkins from Hofstra, Frank Hassell and Kent Bazemore from Old Dominion University, and Chad Tomko from UNC-Wilmington.

What is a Jimmer?!
The past couple of weeks, BYU shooting guard Jimmer Fredette has emerged as one of college basketballs top scorers. The first time I heard of Jimmer, I asked myself "what the hell is a Jimmer?" Well for those who don't know what a Jimmer is, a Jimmer is a 6'2 guard who gets buckets!!! Leading the nation in scoring at 27.4 pts a game. He is best known for his incredible shooting range. His game reminds me somewhat of Stephen Curry who is currently playing for the Golden State Warriors. When Curry was playing for Davidson, he averaged 28.9 pts his final season. According to analysts over at ESPN, they don't see Fredette having a lot of success in the NBA. The same things that they were saying about Curry, they are saying about Fredette as well. "No defense, cant run the point, won't handle the pressure of the NBA..." Hopefully Jimmer Fredette will prove all the nay-sayers wrong just like Stephen Curry is currently trying to do.
